Inheritance Tax Calculator

Estimate your potential UK Inheritance Tax in minutes. Add your estate value, liabilities and key details about your home, gifts and any charitable legacies. We’ll show an indicative bill and how the nil-rate bands are used.

This is guidance, not advice—talk to Saffery for tailored planning.

1 Estate details

Include property, savings, investments and personal possessions at current market value. Subtract outstanding debts and funeral costs. Assets in trust or outside your estate are usually excluded.

2 Home (Residence Nil-Rate Band)

The extra Residence Nil-Rate Band (RNRB) can apply if a main home is left to direct descendants (children, step-children, adopted or foster children, grandchildren). It’s capped by the home’s value and is tapered away when the net estate exceeds £2m.

3 Transferable allowances

If a late spouse/civil partner didn’t use all of their allowances, a percentage can transfer to the survivor. Enter the unused percentage from their estate (often shown on the grant of probate).

4 Lifetime gifts (last 7 years)

Add total gifts after exemptions (e.g. the annual £3,000 allowance). Taper relief reduces the tax on gifts older than 3 years — it doesn’t reduce the gift amount used against your allowances.

5 Charitable legacies

Leaving at least 10% of the ‘baseline amount’ to charity can cut IHT on the rest of the taxable estate from 40% to 36%. You can enter a % of the baseline or a fixed £ amount.
